WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
-
Who: Instructor Artist Roberta Ahrens
-
What: What you will learn...
-
Learn the steps for creating a one of a kind lasting piece of art, with handmade Cracked Linen. This unique 1 day Cracked Linen canvas and Abstracted Botanicals workshop is a journey into your own personal expression on an intriguing surface material.
-
The emphasis will be on making your own piece of plaster embedded canvas Cracked Linen.
-
You will get familiar with my specific plaster mix, stretch and make your own 12" x 12" piece of Cracked Linen.
-
You will learn how to mix the clay base and texture your piece, or if desired create a smoother finish on your piece. Your piece will be set aside to dry and cure.
-
How to manipulate the pieces to crack and distress your canvas.
-
Translate a favorite botanical image onto pre-made 18" x 18" square canvases. We will be drawing, painting, sculpting and gilding on the Cracked Linen plaster surface.
-
Experiment with how to transfer your botanical expression/image in a light environment or dark environment with transfer and projection techniques. I will help you to create a balanced abstraction of a botanical image.
-
We will experiment with how the Cracked Linen surface receives paint and color washes.
-
After painting, the pieces will be assessed... Carving and sanding techniques may be desired.
-
Framing/hanging choices will be discussed and finished works will be on display to help you choose the next steps for your piece.
Completed pieces will be ready for framing in traditional and non traditional applications. There will be lots of exploration, with material techniques and plenty of support in each step.
Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint or bring an apron & thin latex or vinyl protective gloves if you want.
We will break for lunch at noon, and I will provide a list of cute cafe's in the area once you register. Or you can bring your own lunch.
Limited to 12 students.
-
There is a minimum of 8 students and a maximum of 12
